Create Development were delighted to be asked to develop and deliver the Slough Primary Young Ambassador training last week to support the promotion of London 2012 across the borough.
Organised and funded by Laura Brookstein, Network Manager for Slough School Sport Network, this event saw 50 year 4/5/6 child from 25 Junior and Primary schools from across the borough brought together to receive a full day of experiential learning on the Olympic and Paralympic Values, leadership skills and rounded off with collaborative learning and action planning for delivering a child driven legacy in Slough schools for 2012.
Having done a lot of primary Young Ambassadors training over the last few weeks, I took the opportunity to really focus on ensuring the children had the opportunity to fully explore their leadership skills and the Values – the results were amazing! Following Shape Up (from Raising the bar), the children began to discuss the Values in detail to put them into context at school and at home. They identified times when they have had to show determination or courage, followed by sharing who inspires them – the answers were awe-inspiring. From being inspired by professional athletes to their siblings and parents, from the determination to learn to ride a bike to the courage to say no to their peers over negative behaviour – these Young Ambassadors set the tone for a wonderfully engaging and emotional day.
During the review, all 50 children were able to recall FREDICE (Values acronym) and also their top 3 leadership skills…………what topped it off was that they were role modelling these Values by the end of the day by having the courage to stand in front of their peers and share what they learnt!
I have high hopes that Slough primary schools will be doing some amazing things in preparation for 2012 – with these 50 children leading the way it is sure to be a success!
